Obertan in for Toon’s first test on Saturday?

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Gabriel Obertan’s imminent signing at Newcastle United will go some way to appeasing what has been a very tough pre-season to endure for Toon fans. It all started so well with an influx of young, French and very talented group of players moving across the channel and up the M1 to a seemingly all smiles Newcastle United.

As a lifelong Toon fan I was all smiles 3 weeks into the much awaited transfer window after we had signed 3 players on frees and a French international for just £4.8 million. However after an extremely slow July where players were injured and denied visa’s things simply went from bad to worse as we moved into August.

With the incumbent right winger Joey Barton out one day and in the fold the next we now have competition for him on that flank which he occupied so well last season. Obertan offers a different type of option on that flank now though. From what I’ve seen he holds undoubted pace and trickery and a game which stood out for me was on New Year’s day when he really did look lighting against West Brom. The only question mark I would hold over him would be his composure and ability to pick a pass when in the danger area, but only time will tell with that one. And one thing he will get at Newcastle is time on the pitch to hopefully showcase the potential which he demonstrated at Bordeaux and Lorient when he was able to play regular football.

The question now is will he be able to give us a taste of his skill on Saturday against the Gunners? I hope he will even if it is from bench coming on to stretch the tired legs of the Arsenal players in later stages- alla Nile Ranger last year when Koscielny was left for dead! Whatever happens it would be nice to see him come on and give us Toon fans something to shout about in what has been an awfully frustrating pre season.

Here is how I would fit him in:
